While there wasn’t a formal injury report issued prior to today’s game, the Syracuse Orange have suffered quite a few losses on that front. We knew Juwan Dowels and Antwan Cordy were out for the season already. Matt Park reports this morning that several other Orange players also failed to make the trip to face UConn:
Injured & not on trip: LT Cody Conway, C Jason Emerich, RG Omari Palmer, DT Kayton Samuels, S Kielan Whitner in addition to Cordy & Dowels.— Matt Park (@MattPark1) September 24, 2016
The offensive line is down three major contributors today, with Jason Emerich, Cody Conway and Omari Palmer all out. That’ll likely mean starts for Colin Byrne (center), Evan Adams (right guard) and either Jon Burton or Michael Lasker (left tackle).
Kayton Samuels experienced a leg injury early against USF last week, and while he did come back in, it was just briefly for a play. SU doesn’t have the depth to really deal with any losses along the line, but will now have to plug in a variety of names in Samuels’s absence. Expect Anthony Giudice to see the field a bit more at defensive tackle (among others like McKinley Williams).
Going without Kielan Whitner is another tough loss, especially with the long list of injuries already for the secondary. Daivon Ellison will be starting for the second straight week. Against USF, Ellison’s efforts earned him ACC co-defensive back of the week honors.
Not great news, and SU’s depth is going to be tested once again. Just hope for everyone else to stay healthy...
