SB Nation Season Preview: UConn is improving at football for the first time in a really long time. Now to score points!
Rivalry: 6-3, UConn
Current Streak: 1, Syracuse
First Meeting: Walter Reyes rushed for 121 yards and two touchdowns while Perry Patterson was 11-for-19 passing for 125 yards and a career-best two touchdowns in a 42-30 SU victory over the Huskies in the Carrier Dome in 2004.
Last Meeting: Bakc in 2012, the Syracuse offense was a beast and we were the ones putting points up on the board in the Dome. We did that thanks to Ryan Nassib and Sir Alec Lemon en route to a 40-10 victory.
Head Coaches: SU: Dino Babers (1st Year, 1-2), UConn: Bob Diaco (3rd Year, 10-18)
Head Coach Bio: After a playing career at Iowa, Diaco worked his way up the coaching ladder at at Western Illinois, Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan, Virginia, Cincinnati, and Notre Dame before taking over at UConn in 2014. Paul Pasqualoni had let the program fall into disarray (hmm...) and he's spent the years since rebuilding it. So far, he's doing a decent job. Bummer.
Curious Connections: Bob Diaco breaks a streak of Guys Who Used To Coach At Syracuse Taking Over At UConn (Randy Edsall, Paul Pasqualoni).
Last Year: UConn finished the season 6–7 (4–4) and earned an invite to the St. Petersburg Bowl. They lost that game to Marshall. Somehow, they beat Houston during the season.
Last Game: The Huskies got their ACC tune-up and survived a sloppy slugfest with Virginia, 13-10.
"Fear Me, I've Killed Hundreds of Timelords": Quarterback Bryant Shirreffs has had a pedestrian season, statistically-speaking. He's thrown for 555 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. The guy we need to focus on is receiver Nowl Thomas, who has caught 26 passes (50 percent of Shirreffs completions) for 277 yards (50 percent of Shirreffs yards thrown) and the lone touchdown.
If Syracuse Wins: The Orange will have shown they're not ready to throw in the towel just yet and will have actually made good on one of the few remaining "sure wins."
If Syracuse Loses: If we can't beat UConn...WhoCann we beat?
Fun Fact: In the entire history of Syracuse football, we have never won a game in the state of Connecticut. That includes UConn (0-4), Yale (0-11).
