Gotta catch ‘em all, right, Erv?

Syracuse Orange wide receiver Erv Phillips tied former Syracuse receiver and NFL Hall of Famer Art Monk’s single-game receptions record Friday, after hauling in 14 catches for 87 yards during Syracuse’s season-opening 33-7 win over Colgate.

The record-tying catch came at 12:26 in the 4th quarter. Syracuse drove inside Colgate’s 10-yard line before being stuffed on first and second down.

Quarterback Eric Dungey was able to then escape the grasps of a Raiders defender and the sack before finding Phillips in the corner of the end zone for a touchdown. The score made it Syracuse 33, Colgate 7.

With six minutes remaining, Phillips still had time to potentially break the record and make Syracuse history in new head coach Dino Babers’ debut, but – with the game already in hand – Babers opted to sit his starters for Syracuse’s last two drives.
