As most of you probably already know by now, Syracuse Orange QB commit Tommy DeVito is a pretty good football player. But over the past few weeks, the rest of the country has taken notice, too. DeVito has climbed the rankings of all the major recruiting sites, and most recently moved up to No. 136 in the ESPN 300. As of right now, here’s where he stands:
Site | Stars | Overall Ranking | State Ranking (NJ) | Position Ranking |
ESPN | Four | No. 136 | No. 3 | No. 7 (Pocket Passers) |
24/7 | Four | No.241 | No.6 | No. 7 (Pro-Style QBs) |
Scout | Three | N/A | No. 1 QB |
No. 31 (All QBs) |
Rivals | Three | N/A | N/A | No. 15 (Pro-Style QBs) |
The boost has made DeVito a four-star recruit on 24/7’s composite rankings, which takes all of the major recruiting sites into consideration and makes one rating out of them. After his performances at The Opening and Elite 11, you knew DeVito would have to move up on the lists at some point. DeVito has said he doesn’t care about rankings, but last week he told Syracuse.com’s Stephen Bailey he was surprised he hadn’t been making moves:
"Especially because the performances that I had were at The Opening and the Elite 11, where I did better than some of the guys that were five stars and ESPN300, who were in All-America games. I was like, 'Alright, it's whatever.' I don't know, I guess they're just sticking with those guys and they like big-name guys because it's how they get paid."
DeVito isn’t the only reason Syracuse fans have a good feeling about this year’s recruiting class. It’s really early in the cycle, but right now the Orange are having one of its best recruiting years in recent memory, and increased ratings for players like DeVito will only help those numbers rise further.
The Dino Babers system combined with DeVito and the rest of a potentially great recruiting class has everyone in Syracuse itching for September. But remember, this hype is still all over a coach who hasn’t hit the sidelines yet and players who won’t even sign until February, so I’m not letting my guard down yet.
