No. 2 Syracuse 8, Temple 0: Orange field hockey dominates opener

Nice way to get things going for the defending national champs.

The second-ranked Syracuse Orange field hockey team headed to Philadelphia to face the Temple Owls yesterday, and they rolled out with a resounding 8-0 victory.

SU’s Liz Sack began the scoring a the 11:31 mark, and the team never looked back, outshooting Temple 22-3 in the contest. Emma Lamison and Lies Lagerweij picked up two goals apiece, while Sack, Roos Weers, Jennifer Bleakney and Elaine Cary also got on the board. New goaltender Regan Spencer stopped the only shot on net she faced, grabbing the shutout in her first career start.

The eight-goal margin was the team’s widest since a 9-1 victory over Cornell last season. It’s their most impressive shutout victory since a 12-0 domination of Vermont in 2011.

Syracuse has now won 21 straight regular season games, with the last loss coming to Wake Forest in 2014. They’ll put that streak on the line once again this Sunday. SU faces the sixth-ranked Maryland Terrapins at noon in Philadelphia.
