The Orange (2-0-1) faced their toughest test of the young season when Army (0-2-0) came into town yesterday afternoon.
For the second-straight game, it took until the second half for Syracuse to break through. They had had several chances throughout the first 45 minutes but were unable to figure out the right combination. Junior forward Eva Gordon finally found the back of the net off of a corner kick in the 54th minute. The ball ricocheted off of several players before getting to Gordon’s right boot for the score.
The Black Knights wouldn’t go away, though, with a few chances of their own. Nicole Bautista had a shot to tie the game and send it into overtime in the 89th minute. Her kick had just a bit too much punch to it, though, as the ball missed the top of the net by a hair. The Syracuse defense would make sure to not give Army any leeway from then on, securing the win as well as the team’s second-straight shutout.
It was an evenly-matched game, with the teams knotted at eight shots apiece. The Black Knights ended up having three more corners than the Orange but failed to convert any of the five. Syracuse was called offside 11 times throughout the full 90 minutes of play, but it didn’t stop them from getting three shots on goal.
This is the first time in a long time that the ladies have started the season so well, according to our own Nick Petraccione who does double-duty for Citrus TV:
With a 1-0 win over Army today, @cusewsoc is undefeated through their first three games. Last time that happened... 2004 @CitrusTVSports
