Get to know your Orange man - No. 8, S Antwan Cordy

The junior safety from Florida is small in size but big in heart.

NCAA Football: Boston College at Syracuse Mark Konezny-USA TODAY Sports

Name: Antwan Cordy

Position: Safety

Year: Junior

Height: 5’8”

Weight: 175

Hometown: Homestead, FL

High School: South Dade

2015 Stats: Cordy started all 12 games at strong safety, finishing second on the team with 68 tackles and tying for the team lead in interceptions and fumble recoveries with two apiece. He also set the SU single-season record for tackles for loss by a defensive back with 12.

2016 Projections: Listed as the starting free safety on the Syracuse Orange post-spring depth chart, Cordy figures to be a key piece to the Orange secondary this season.

How’d He Get Here: Cordy chose SU over offers from Duke, Minnesota, Akron, Marshall, Hawaii and a few others.

What’d Recruiting Sites Say?: He got two stars from Rivals.com and Scout.com, but he greatly exceeded that with his performance during his sophomore season.

Money Quote: After Scott Shafer was fired following the 2015 season, Cordy was unsure if he wanted to continue his college career at SU. When Dino Babers arrived on campus, his feelings changed for the better.

“When I was in the press conference,” Cordy said, “he (Babers) was talking really great and that just changed my mind.”

Links of Wonder: Nate Mink of Syracuse.com wrote an article about just how close Cordy was to transferring away from SU after Shafer was fired. Quotes from Cordy give us insight into his thought process and what went into his decision to ultimately stay.

What Does the Coaching Staff Think of Him?: Cordy is one of the returning leaders on defense, both statistically and emotionally, so I’m sure the defensive staff recognizes him as an important leader for the new, Tampa-2 scheme.

Interesting Nugget O’Interest: Cordy is nicknamed “giant”, despite his small size, due to the fact that he plays the game with so much heart and toughness.
