It didn’t take very long for the Syracuse Orange women’s soccer team to get on the board in their season-opening game last night at Colgate in Hamilton, N.Y.

Junior forward Sheridan Street scored just 45 seconds into the contest off of freshman forward Sydney Brackett’s shot that hit the post and rebounded out. Right from the get-go, the Orange controlled the ball and thus the pace of the double-overtime game. The defense held the Raiders to five shots and two shots on goal total, their only lapse coming, ironically, in the 44th minute of the first half when freshman forward Mara Consentino pounded the ball into the right corner of the net out of junior goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan’s reach.

After Street’s opening goal, Syracuse had eight more chances that were on-target but they just couldn’t phase opposing goalkeeper Kelly Chiavaro. They ended the game with 22 total shots.

Four newbies started for the Orange and had an immediate impact. Most notably, Brackett took six shots, three of them on-goal while her teammate Carolin Bader had four shots, two of them within the box.
