Name: Corey Winfield
Position: Cornerback
Year: (Redshirt) Junior
Height: 6'1”
Weight: 190
Hometown: St. Louis, Mo.
High School: Riverview Gardens
2015 Stats: Started eight games, recording 30 tackles, with two sacks, three pass break-ups and a forced fumble. He also tied for the team lead in interceptions with two (including one returned for a touchdown).
2016 Projections: Winfield should start again at corner, and hopefully keep improving coverage-wise in the new scheme. Those sacks are probably a thing of the past in the Tampa-2, but there’s no reason the interceptions need to go away.
How'd He Get Here?: The then-wide receiver flipped from Northern Illinois to Syracuse. He also had offers from Purdue, Western Kentucky, Arkansas State and others.
What'd Recruiting Sites Say?: Rivals and ESPN said three stars, so we’re only going to count those ratings.
Money Quote: A friend had very complimentary words for Winfield coming out of the scary Naesean Howard stabbing incident this offseason:
"Chauncey couldn't hit him at all. Chauncey had one arm. At the end of the day, if there is a big savior in this whole situation, it's Corey Winfield. He put his life on the line for his best friend."
Links of Wonder: Last year, Syracuse.com’s Stephan Bailey focused in on Winfield adapting his athleticism to make plays on defense (vs. his original position on offense).

What Does the Coaching Staff Think of Him?: Babers was very concerned for both Winfield and Chauncey Scissum following the stabbing incident, but was confident afterward that they’d be in camp (ended up being true).
Interesting Nugget O'Interest: In 2014, Winfield claimed the transition to cornerback came easy to him.
Let's Get a Good Look Atcha: Winfield has some pretty solid leaping ability, as you may know.
