The Syracuse Orange basketball program has been pretty busy on the recruiting trail of late, as you’ve probably noticed. You can add another name to the growing list of serious prospects for the class of 2017.
As reported by Ben Sigel, four-star shooting guard Alex O’Connell will visit campus on the weekend of September 16. The Georgia (Marietta) native is ranked as the 13th-best shooting guard and 65th-best player overall in the 2017 class by Scout. He has offers from Louisville, UConn, Miami, UCLA and NC State, among others.
This won’t be O’Connell’s first trip to Syracuse, however. The 6-foot-6, 170-pound shooter was on campus back in June, and loved everything about the visit, per Scout.
The Orange are obviously targeting guards given the team’s lack of real depth at the position going into the future. For 2016-17, the team has John Gillon, Tyus Battle and Frank Howard, with the potential to add Nebraska transfer Andrew White as well. Gillon only has one year of eligibility (this year) remaining, and the same would go for White.
O’Connell has yet to set a timetable for his decision, but the Orange will be pursuing him and several other guards very seriously as this recruiting cycle continues.
