Get to know your Orange man - No. 17 WR Jamal Custis

Let’s look at what could be the Orange’s best red-zone weapon.

NCAA Football: Maryland at Syracuse Mark Konezny-USA TODAY Sports

Name: Jamal Custis

Position: Wide receiver

Year: Junior

Height: 6'5"

Weight: 224

Hometown: Philadelphia, Pa.

High School: Neumann-Goretti

2015 Stats: He had one reception for seven yards against Central Michigan that happened to be his first collegiate touchdown.

2016 Projections: Custis has constantly made Orange fans drool at the thought of using his 6-foot-5 stature as a red zone weapon. He currently sits second on the depth chart behind senior Alvin Cornelius, but Babers’s offense certainly has use for him as an outside threat with his size.

How'd He Get Here: Syracuse beat regional rivals UConn, Rutgers and Pittsburgh for Custis, who had seven D-I offers and drew interest from several other teams.

What'd Recruiting Sites Say: He was rated a three star recruit by Scout, Rivals, 247Sports, and ESPN.

Money Quote: Custis, like the Orange fan base, got frustrated watching Syracuse's inability in the red zone.

"I'm thinking every time, put me out and I'm going to make a play," Custis said. "That's what I kind of look forward to, when we get to the red zone. In the future, I'm hoping that they put me out there."

Links of Wonder: In 2015, Custis made the Sporting News list of 30 football players who could be intriguing basketball players. He played four years of varsity basketball in high school, helping his team win four Catholic League championships.

Tweets of Wonder: Syracuse is known for that.

What Does the Coaching Staff Think of Him?: They haven't commented on him publicly.

Interesting Nugget O'Interest: The two-sport star says he's sticking to football, but the door is open for him to walk on to the basketball team.
