Bit of a Wednesday shocker as the Syracuse Orange have a new athletic director today: John Wildhack. Chances are you've never heard of the guy before today. So let's figure out who our new leader is.
First and foremost, Wildhack comes to us after spending the last 36 years working for ESPN in some capacity. He started as a production assistant in 1980 (the year it started) and started working his way up the corporate ladder to eventually become executive vice president, production in 2012 and executive vice president, programming and production, in January 2014.
Big aspects of the jobs he's worked include overseeing rights negotiations, managing relationships with rights holders for ESPN entities, producing football broadcasts, and tons more production and programming roles. Basically if there's some kind of high-level situation involving sports network programming, he's been involved.
Before all of this we should point out that Wildhack is a Syracuse alum. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he got his degree in telecommunications in 1980 from SU. That should appease the wackos out there who said being an SU person should be the No. 1 qualification.
We'll learn a lot more about him in the coming days, I'm sure, but consider it a very good sign for the future of Syracuse Athletics that someone with that strong of a relationship with ESPN is now our representative, no matter what you think of The Worldwide Leader.
