Syracuse Orange fans were pretty excited to see New Jersey product Tommy DeVito commit for the class of 2017 just last month. The Don Bosco Prep quarterback was already pretty well-regarded in the Northeast, and now it seems like those accolades could continue to grow nationally.
"I am very excited because I have been watching the Elite 11 on TV for years and it is any quarterback's dream to be a part of it. I enjoy competing with and hanging out with the best athletes from the State of New Jersey and around the country in a fun, competitive atmosphere."
The Elite 11, one of several national recruiting events, is specifically for quarterbacks. Top performers from the June finals will head to Beaverton, Ore. for the Opening Finals at Nike Headquarters, July 5-10.
While an Elite 11 invite isn't a guaranteed measure of success, it is a good indicator of who the best quarterbacks of each year's recruiting class are going into their senior year of high school. Recent notable participants have included Josh Rosen (UCLA), Deshaun Watson (Clemson), Brad Kaaya (Miami), Jared Goff (Cal, now Los Angeles Rams) and Jameis Winston (Florida State, now Tampa Bay Buccaneers). A quick glance at the alums list will yield a whole lot more names you'll certainly recognize. No Orange signee has ever attended Elite 11.
This year's list of attendees is still taking shape, but based on previous years, you can bet it will be a talented collection of players in L.A. next month. I'm planning to attend at least part of the event since wherever it may be in L.A. (site's not announced yet) is nearby enough. Hopefully we'll see some great results from Tommy and can grab some quality interview time as well.
