Syracuse Women's Lacrosse: Orange Beat Duke But Snow Cancels Canisius Doubleheader

No. 4 Syracuse defeats No. 14 Duke at home, but a snowstorm in Buffalo forced Canisius and the Orange to halt play late in the second half.

This weekend in Syracuse Orange sports has been consumed with basketball and many did not hear about the oddity that happened to the SU women's lacrosse team on Sunday. After beating No. 14 Duke 14-12 earlier in the day at home, the Orange traveled straight to their next game. However, their game against Canisius in Buffalo was then canceled due to snow.

So what's the big deal that it was canceled? They will reschedule right? Yes they will. But what makes this interesting is that the game was called when it was 10-10 with 6:05 left to play in the second half. They will resume the game this Tuesday April 5th where they left off. There is no resetting the score or clock, the two teams will play 6:05 minutes of lacrosse tied at 10-10.

This suspension really favors the Orange. This was not an ideal situation to begin with. Doubleheaders are always strenuous on athletes. Especially when you played a hard-fought game against a Top 20 opponent.

Of all weekends to have a doubleheader, this was not one of them. It's one thing to play two games at your own house, but to play and then travel two hours to play again is incredibly hard. Not only that, but did you see the weather this weekend?! Syracuse and Canisius were playing in a blizzard!

It got so bad that during breaks they had personnel shovel the lines on the field so the players knew where they were. It was cold and it was not a game Syracuse wanted to be playing.

Syracuse struggled. Canisius is a team that the Orange would blow out of the water on any given day. But after playing Duke and having to travel and play in the snow, a fresh Golden Griffins team had a clear advantage and they made the most of it.

The largest lead for Syracuse came early in the second half when Devon Parker put SU up 10-7. But the Orange began to fatigue and Canisius scored three in a row to bring the game to a 10-10 tie where it ended.

Syracuse could have lost this game late if they decided to continue and losing to an unranked school would've looked very bad on a post-season resume, even given the conditions 'Cuse played under. Canisius was storming back and who knows what could've happened in that final six minutes

The restart gives Syracuse all of Monday to recoup and get ready to play 6:05 minutes of lacrosse. If I was the Golden Griffins I wish that game never got canceled because now you're going up against a rested Syracuse team that is No. 4 in the nation. In six minutes I have little doubt that Syracuse will put Canisius away and secure the win.

It may have been terrible to play in that snow and stand on those sidelines during the ever falling snow, but it was a blessing in disguise for Syracuse.

SU and Canisius will resume play on Tuesday April 5th. A start time has not yet been announced.

Here are the highlights from the first game of Syracuse's doubleheader (vs. No. 14 Duke), where the Orange squeezed out a 14-12 win:
