Syracuse Basketball Recruiting: 2016 Recruit Taurean Thompson Visiting This Weekend

This was already going to be a very big weekend for Syracuse basketball recruiting and now it's even bigger.

This weekend, Syracuse Orange coaches were already set to host a slew of bigtime recruits on campus, including 2017 targets Jordan Tucker, Hamidou Diallo, and Quade Green. 2016 signee Matthew Moyer will also be on hand. Now you can add another big name to that list, 2016 recruit Tauren Thompson.

Syracuse has been recruiting Thompson for a very long time and he's already taken an official visit to SU last year. He's also visited Connecticut, Seton Hall and Xavier. Syracuse, Georgetown, Seton Hall and Providence made up his final four when he released his list in February. The 6-foot-9 power forward has said that he'd wait for the spring to declare where he's going and this could be a final decision-maker. He is one of only five players listed in the Top 100 that remains undecided.

It goes without saying that Thompson would be a perfect get for the Orange, who need as much big man depth as they can get. He'd be joining 6-foot-8 forward Moyer and 6-foor-6 guard Tyus Battle if he were to commit.

Syracuse has a backup plan, however, in 6-foot-10 Cheickna Dembele. The 2016 Chambersburg, PA recruit narrowed his list to ten schools on Tuesday and Syracuse made the cut. Also on the list are UNLV, Temple, Michigan State, Missouri, Maryland, St. Joseph's, Iowa State, Baylor and Pittsburgh. Dembele would be more of a project with only one season of high school basketball under his belt (Fab Melo, anyone?) but potentially worth the risk given what he could learn behind Paschal Chukwu and Dajuan Coleman.
