Dan Patrick doesn't like hosting galas.
Jim Boeheim had been trying to get him to host he and his wife Juli's event for years, with Patrick making an excuse every year as to why he couldn't attend. So if you think of Patrick as a referee who had just made a bad call, Boeheim stayed on him for years in trying to get him to change his mind.
Prior to this season's NCAA Tournament, Patrick told Boeheim that he would host the gala if the Syracuse Orange made the Elite Eight after sneaking in to the Big Dance.
When Boeheim and the Orange took it one step farther in making the Final Four, Patrick agreed to "pay up" on his bet and host the event for Jim and Juli Boeheim.

You're so lucky you get to come to Syracuse in April. It won't be snowing. What better present could you have than that?" Boeheim quipped on the Dan Patrick Show. "We had Bob Costas last year, so we realize its a little bit of a step down for us, but we're still happy to have you here."
