Syracuse Women's Lacrosse: Orange Dominate Virginia in ACC Opener

For the third-straight year, Syracuse opened conference play against the Cavaliers and for the third-straight time, they're coming back home with the win.

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

The Syracuse Orange were due for another good game after their disappointing overtime loss to No. 3 Florida this past Tuesday. They got exactly that and more in their 14-8 victory over Virginia on Saturday.

Syracuse's freshman attacker Nicole Levy and senior attacker Kayla Treanor got the team rolling with goals within the first four minutes of the game. Virginia's sophomore midfielder Kasey Behr found the back of the net a little over a minute later, but that would be as close as the Hoos would get for the rest of the game. Even with the teams trading goals through the 11th minute of the first half, the Orange defense would not let the Cavaliers tie the game. The offense helped the cause by racking up four goals in-a-row from the 12th minute of the first until the second minute of the second.

The defense kept up the momentum in the second half, the closest score for the remainder of the game 10-8 with 17:09 left. Virginia's final goal was scored by junior attacker Besser Dysan, and was followed by four-straight Syracuse goals before time expired.

The ebb and flow of the game saw small dips in favor of the Hoos, with tall rises corresponding to the Orange. There never seemed to be any moment of panic, even when Syracuse's lead was cut down to two goals. Scoring hasn't been an issue so far this season, as the lowest goal total was nine in their win over Binghamton back on Valentine's Day. It also helps when you outshoot your opponent 26-22 and have 23 shots on-goal while the other team has only 14. Also of note, the Orange won 14 draw controls, seven of them thanks to Treanor, and forced 11 turnovers, while only committing eight.
