Tuesday, we heard the curious news that once-Syracuse Orange strong safety Naesean Howard wanted to be actual Syracuse Orange strong safety Naesean Howard once again. According to Syracuse.com, he even went as far as to talk to head coach Dino Babers outside the football facilities and was told to speak with "the athletic director."
On one hand, the guy obviously has talent and whatever happened between him and Scott Shafer is in the past. On the other hand, he did leave the program under difficult terms and Babers is under no obligation to take him back.
According to a source who spoke with the Daily Orange, it looks like it's going to be the latter. At least for now.
The former Syracuse safety was told by director of operations Brad Wittke that he’d have to wait until the summer, when he might be given a chance to join workouts or try out then.
It's better than nothing, I suppose. At least he has a chance to go to the Rudy route and work his way back on to the roster. Besides, Dino has a whole slew of guys he wanted in the program and a lot more already on the roster to worry about.
Howard had transferred to Wagner after leaving Syracuse but returned to the university in the Fall. He'll have to keep those grades up and stay in shape before he possibly gets a chance this summer to work his way back to the squad.
