One of Dino Babers's targets while retooling the Syracuse Orange's 2016 class, Joshua Black flipped his commitment from Illinois back in January. Now, the defensive end joins SU to provide some much-needed help on the defensive line.
High School: Harlem High School (Machesney Park, Ill.)
Position: Defensive End
Stats: 6'2", 237 pounds
Main Recruiter: No notes there, though definitely one of Babers's holdover staff members from Bowling Green, as he had an offer from the Falcons much earlier.
Commitment Date: January 25, 2016
Ratings: 3 stars across the board.
Other Offers: Along with Syracuse and Illinois, Josh also received offers from Ball State, Bowling Green and Toledo at the FBS level. Lafayette and Southern Illinois also made offers from the FCS.
Black hasn't been playing football very long, but you can see that he's been a quick learner thus far. That could mean high upside for Syracuse under Babers & Co. The Orange desperately need help on the defensive line as the team transitions to a new Tampa-2 scheme, so any help is good help. But if Brian Ward and the defensive staff are able to put in the time with the physically talented Black and help him develop within the system, he could round into a high-quality defender for SU by the time his career wraps up.
The only conceivable drawback right now: With fellow defensive end Josh White headed to Georgia Tech, any possibilities of the Carrier Dome PA playing Michael Jackson's "Black or White" have been tossed out the window. So you'll take your "Black is the New Orange" nonsense and like it.
