In a close and important game that came down to the last minute, Alexis Peterson and Cornelia Fondren helped Syracuse close out against NC State. Alexis Peterson scored the last eight of the last nine points, including going 5-of-6 from the free throw line. All eight of her 4th quarter points came within the final six minutes of the game. Cornelia Fondren came in the clutch as well. In the final quarter, she recorded three rebounds, two assists, one steal, and the last bucket of the game; a free throw to seal the victory 55-52.
Syracuse could not force as many turnovers as they usually do, forcing only 12 the entire contest. This proved to be a problem as NC State took the lead early. Syracuse had to rally back into the game in the second half. Briana Day led the third quarter charge by scoring 10 points. She also grabbed four rebounds just in the third quarter. She finished the game with 14 points and 12 rebounds for Day's sixth double-double of the season.
This was an important game for Syracuse because they are currently in fourth place in the ACC with a 10-3 record. The top four seeds get a double-bye in the ACC tournament. NC State was in 6th place but had a 9-4 record before playing Syracuse. Had the Wolfpack been able to secure a win against the Orange, they would have jumped Syracuse into the fifth spot, and Syracuse would have fallen into the sixh spot, also behind Miami.
Syracuse's next game is pivotal. They play their final regular-season game at home. #10 Florida State come to the Dome on Thursday, February 18th for the biggest game of the season so far for the Orange.
