UConn Blog: The UConn Blog

Rivalry: 55-37, Syracuse

Current Streak: 1, SU

First Meeting: Vinnie Cohen led the way with 25 points, and Gary Clark added another 22 as the Orangemen beat UConn in Syracuse, 102-82. Syracuse was a dominant 18-7 that year and made it all the way to the Elite 8 in the NCAA Tournament.

Last Meeting: Syracuse roared back in the second half during the Battle 4 Atlantis, then hung on for a 79-76 victory as their unbeaten streak away from the contiguous 48 states remained intact. UConn made a feverish comeback in the closing minutes, but a heady, “definitely on purpose” three-point heave from Trevor Cooney kept the ball from the Huskies with time expiring.

Head Coaches: SU: Jim Boeheim (41st Year, 990-344), UConn: Kevin Ollie (5th Year, 100-48)

Head Coach Bio: Ollie played at UConn from 1991-95, then moved on to the Continental Basketball Association after going undrafted by the NBA. He’d work his way up to the NBA by 1997 and played in the league through 2010. On his career, he averaged 3.8 points and 2.3 assists per game. Following his playing days, he headed back to Storrs, Conn. to become an assistant coach under Jim Calhoun. When Calhoun retired in 2012, the then-unproven Ollie was promoted to the head job.

Since taking over in 2012, Ollie has won at least 20 games in each of his four full seasons, making the NCAA Tournament twice, and winning the (ugh) 2014 national championship.

Last Year: The Huskies got back to the NCAA Tournament after a one-year absence, but fell in the second round to eventual Elite 8 participant Kansas.

Last Game: UConn squeaked by fellow Northeast midmajor Boston University by a score of 51-49. Things got pretty interesting in the second half as BU pushed the Huskies around in the paint, and outrebounded them on the game. But nonetheless, UConn recorded its first home victory of the season. They’re 3-4 thus far.

"Fear Me, I've Killed Hundreds of Timelords": Jalan Adams is a pretty dangerous shooter, and all-around player. He’s averaging 18 points per game, plus 5.4 assists and five rebounds per. He’s scored 25 or more in three of his last five games, including a season-high 34 against Oklahoma State.

If Syracuse Wins: We’ll watch this on loop.

If Syracuse Loses: We’ll officially be in panic mode around here, as Syracuse would be 5-3, and 0-3 away from the Carrier Dome on the young season.

Fun Fact no. 1: Syracuse is 1-1 vs. UConn in major sports this season. The UConn women’s basketball team beat SU for the national title back in April. But the Orange football team sort of avenged that defeat on the football field this fall, with a 31-24 win.

Fun Fact no. 2: The two teams have met 13 different times at Madison Square Garden, but this is the first regular season matchup. Syracuse is 7-6 in those previous games, including a pretty famous one that went into six overtimes. You’re probably watched it once or 10 times.
