Syracuse Lacrosse: 2017 schedule released with a similar feel

SU will face the same opponents for the second year in a row with the Orange opening up its season on February 11 against Siena at the Carrier Dome.

NCAA Lacrosse: Quarterfinals- Syracuse-Johns Hopkins Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

Ladies and gentlemen! The 2017 Syracuse Orange lacrosse schedule is here!

You: Hey Jim, do we have some big game planned at a big time neutral stadium?!?!

Jim: Nah.

You: Ok, but do we have some new, exciting opponent on the schedule?!?

Jim: Nah.

You: Oh, well at least the ‘Cuse will be playing Hopkins at home after losing in a snowstorm at Homewood last year, right

Jim: Nah

In fact, if you are familiar with the 2016 schedule, you will find the 2017 schedule very, very similar. Because it is basically the same schedule. The standout from this year’s lineup is the matchup against Hopkins which will once again be played at Hopkins. The Syracuse Athletic Department noted this and explained that it is due to SU hosting the first and second round of the NCAA women’s basketball tournament. Therefore, the two teams will play on the same weekend at Homewood Field.

The season kicks off on February 11, no earlier than last year, when the Orange host the Siena Saints. The Albany Great Danes and Army Black Knights are next up before the annual early season matchup against the Virginia Cavaliers. March 11 will be the first outdoor game for Syracuse when the Orange travel to Queens, NY to take on the St. John’s Red Storm.

Next up is the toughest stretch of the season when SU plays at Johns Hopkins, Duke, and at Notre Dame. Four days after the matchup against the Irish, SU will play its annual rivalry game at Hobart on April 5. Less than a week later, Cornell will travel to the Dome and four days after that SU goes down to Chapel Hill, NC to take on UNC.

The Binghamton Bearcats will be the warm up opponent for the ACC Tournament and then the season closes out with a game at Colgate.

Overall, this schedule is, as expected. However, my gut reaction is this team goes 9-4 in the regular season and 1-3 in the ACC with the only win a squeaker over the Virginia Cavaliers. The real question will be whether or not this roster can make another late season run in the ACC Tournament to make the NCAA Tournament field.
