Syracuse football confirms Central Connecticut State as final 2017 opponent

We’ve known this for a bit, but SU has now confirmed.

NCAA Football: North Carolina State at Syracuse Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

About a month back, we wrote about the Syracuse Orange football team scheduling Central Connecticut State as its final 2017 opponent. Matt Park had tweeted some hints about it, and then FBSchedules.com uncovered a STATS FCS article that detailed SU had added CCSU to the 2017 slate, along with Wagner to 2018.

While the Wagner date has still yet to be confirmed, we do have actual acknowledgment of the CCSU game now:

The game is currently set for Saturday, September 2. But Syracuse has typically kicked off on the Friday before Labor Day in recent years, to try and catch fans before they head out of town for the holiday.

In any case, the early September date now ends any speculation of the Orange having to kick off on Labor Day vs. Louisville or another ACC opponent, as well as worries of a very early bye. For the past few seasons, the Orange have left open spots in September, only to have them filled with conference foes or a bye. With CCSU set for the first weekend, the 2017 schedule now looks like this:

September 2: Central Connecticut State

September 9: Middle Tennessee

September 16: Central Michigan

September 23: at LSU

Home ACC: Boston College, Clemson, Pittsburgh, Wake Forest

Road ACC: Florida State, Louisville, NC State, Miami

The full conference schedule should arrive by February or so.

In the meantime, just be happy that the Orange have finally completed the 2017 schedule. Now let’s switch focus to 2018, which still has an FBS opponent opening, along with 2019 and beyond, which all have at least two open scheduling spots.
