Syracuse field hockey earns no. 3 seed in NCAA Tournament

The defending national champs will face Harvard to start their journey back to the top.

The Syracuse Orange field hockey team has earned the no. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Defending last year’s national championship, SU finished the year 14-3 and ranked second in the nation, though they suffered an upset loss to Wake Forest in the ACC quarterfinals last week. Now, they’ll face Harvard on Saturday to begin their trip back to (hopefully) another title.

Syracuse will host the first two rounds prior to the Final Four. Should they beat the Crimson, they’ll see a familiar foe for Sunday’s quarterfinal. Unseeded UConn and Boston College will also play at SU, with the winner facing whichever team advances from Harvard and the Orange.

The Orange earn a top-four seed for the fourth consecutive year, and a return to the title game would be their third straight trip there. They lost 1-0 to UConn back in 2014, and beat North Carolina 4-2 last season for the program’s first national championship.

Beyond SU, the other top seeds were secured by Duke (no. 1), Maryland (no. 2) and Penn State (no. 4). Maryland has won eight championships, while Penn State and Duke have never won (though both have appeared in multiple title games).

Syracuse will play Harvard at 11:30 a.m. ET on Saturday, November 12. Should they advance, they’ll face BC (Bonus #OrangeEagle points?!) or UConn on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.
