The 14th-ranked Syracuse Orange women’s basketball team opened the year with two huge home wins. On Friday night, they picked up their first road victory (despite wearing PLATINUM) — a 78-60 triumph over the Stony Brook Seawolves. SU road a strong first-half scoring effort to the coast to the win. They’re now 3-0 on the year.
Brittany Sykes led all scorers with 19 points (on 8-of-13 shooting), and also grabbed seven boards. Four Orange starters scored in double figures, including fellow guard Alexis Peterson. Peterson also dished eight assists on the evening to lead the team.
The story of the game was turnovers, however. Syracuse forced 34 of them vs. the Seawolves, to continue their nation’s-best pace (38 per game going in). Those 34 turnovers led to 36 points.
Syracuse was up 40-30 at the half, and virtually put the game away with a third-quarter scoring outburst of 26 points (to Stony Brook’s 17). SU also killed Stony Brook on the offensive glass, with 16 of their rebounds coming on that end (vs. just seven offensive boards for the Seawolves).
The Orange remain on the road for Monday’s matchup at the Drexel Dragons.
