Now that we’ve all seen about a week’s worth of college basketball, ESPN’s Joe Lundardi has graced us with his latest iteration of “Bracketology.” As of this morning, he has the No. 5-seeded Syracuse Orange facing off against the No. 12-seeded Monmouth Hawks in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in the East pod.
That’s great until you realize that for the second-straight time, Lunardi’s given us a duplicate match-up. In November 3rd’s edition, he had us pitted against Georgetown — an Orange basketball fan’s wet dream, but not very plausible so early in the bracket since the committee avoids regular season rematches. Syracuse faces Monmouth on Friday night, as you’re likely aware.
Aside from that, the possibility of facing UCLA in the second round and No. 1 seed Villanova in the Sweet 16 sounds at least a little daunting.
Some other matchups of note include a potential rematch of the annual Louisville vs. Kentucky game in the Sweet 16, perennial mid-major contenders Xavier and Dayton facing off and our friends Florida Gulf Coast in a 3-seed vs. 14-seed matchup with Gonzaga in the first round.
Also, Georgetown has now been relegated to a play-in game in the West against BYU.
