The John R. Wooden Award announced its preseason top 50 today. It’s little surprise that Syracuse Orange forward Tyler Lydon is among those 50 players named. The Wooden Award goes to the most outstanding player in college basketball each season.
Lydon was already included on the preseason Naismith Trophy watch list as well, which is also given to the best player in the sport, according to their own criteria and voting. The sophomore’s considered a talented NBA Draft prospect for this coming spring. Lydon averaged 10 points and six rebounds last season. He scored just two points but had six rebounds in the 2016-17 season opener vs. Colgate last Friday.
The watch list is a crowded one, obviously, given the total number of players on it. There are also a lot of familiar faces for Syracuse fans. The ACC led all conferences with 12 players total: Lydon, Grayson Allen (Duke), Dwayne Bacon (Florida State), V.J. Beachem (Notre Dame), Joel Berry II (North Carolina), Jaron Blossomgame (Clemson), Harry Giles (Duke), Justin Jackson (North Carolina), Austin Nichols (Virginia), London Perranetes (Virginia), Dennis Smith (NC State) and Jayson Tatum (Duke).
Syracuse’s ACC/Big Ten Challenge opponent Wisconsin had three players named to the list in Bronson Koenig, Ethan Happ and Nigel Hayes.
Lydon and the Orange are back in action tonight vs. Holy Cross. We’ll see if he can start adding to that statistical resume a bit.
