Since their loss to North Carolina, the Syracuse Orange field hockey squad has refocused and churned out five-consecutive wins. This weekend they added Duke to their list of defeated and that helped move them all the way up to No. 2 in the latest Penn Monto/NFHCA Coaches Poll.
UConn remains No. 1 overall with 759 points and 18 first place votes, followed closely by the Orange with 752 points and 11 first place votes. North Carolina, Duke, and Penn State round out the top five as they have for a while now.
The Orange had a dominating weekend which began with a 5-1 thrashing of then-No. 2 Duke and ended with a 5-0 victory over Cornell on the road.
For their efforts, Roos Weers and Emma Lamison picked up some ACC Weekly honors as the co-ACC Defensive Player of the Week and ACC Offensive Player of the Week, respectively.
Lamison was involved in six of the Orange’s 10 goals, including two goals and two assists of her own. She helped set the tone and give SU the space it needed to cruise to victory in both games. She also drew the most corners over the weekend.
Weers scored four goals over the two games, including the first two in each contest. He also helped anchor the back line that limited Duke to two first half shots and one corner.
Not only that but both players received NFHCA National Player of the Week honors as well.
The Orange finish the ACC regular season on Saturday when they take on Virginia in Charlottesville. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and can be viewed on ACC Network Extra.
