The Syracuse Orange women's basketball program came into Sunday's game against No. 12 Duke without a lot of impressive bullet points on their resume. Sure they had an 10-3 record but they fattened up on lesser opponents and were winless so far against ranked teams (0-3). So you wouldn't have been blamed for expecting a loss in the Carrier Dome.
And you would have been wrong, because that's just like you.
The Orange absolutely routed the ranked Blue Devils, cruising to an 86-50 victory. SU opened the game on a 15-3 run and never relinquished the lead from there. 36 points is Syracuse's largest margin of victory against a Top 25 team in program history.
Maggie Morrison scored a career-high 25 points in the win while Alexis Peterson earned 17 points and a career-high 13 assists. Brianna Butler put together a 12-point effort, which puts her within a few points of eighth place on the all-time scoring list.
The win was not only special for the score but also because it marked Coach Quentin Hillsman's 200th as head coach of the Orange. Coach Q is now 200-111 in 10 seasons at SU and owns the best winning percentage in Syracuse history.
SU now travels to play North Carolina on Thursday, January 7. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
