Syracuse (12-4, 2-1) defeated Virginia Tech (13-3,1-2) at home, 60-39, on Sunday, January 10. Both teams came into the game receiving votes from the AP poll, however, neither were ranked. This was a great effort by Syracuse to get back on track, after suffering a tough loss to UNC on the road on Thursday, January 7. The Orange played another fantastic game. They lead the entire time and were at least one possession away from Virginia Tech for the last 25 minutes of the game.
One of Syracuse's top abilities is forcing turnovers. Against VT, Syracuse forced 29. They capitalized off those turnovers with 23 points. Syracuse is currently third in the nation in turnovers forced per game with 25.13. The Full Court Press defense and Half-Court Zone have become staples of Syracuse's success this season.
Alexis Peterson led all scorers with 16 points. She also grabbed four rebounds and dished out seven assists. Peterson has become Syracuse's most consistent player. This is her seventh game this year in which she led Syracuse in scoring.
Syracuse grabbed 50 rebounds, including 27 offensive rebounds. Virginia Tech picked up 40 rebounds. Rebounding is another area in which Syracuse has shown strength.
Syracuse's next game is against the Pittsburgh Panthers. They will come to the Carrier Dome on Thursday, January 14. The game is at 7 p.m. ET and will be aired on ESPN3. Pitt is 8-8 overall and 0-3 so far in the ACC. The Panthers are not a projected tournament team.
