Scott Shafer began the week stating that Eric Dungey was "probably doubtful" to play this Saturday against the LSU Tigers. Well you can remove the "probably" and you can remove the "doubtful" because Dungey is officially out.
"He's going to be out for the game. He's not going to play. I had breakfast with him this morning. He's doing well. He's feeling a lot better, but he won't play this week."
I like that Shafer always has to qualify it so that you know Dungey is still capable of doing human things. Here he tells us that Eric is able to eat breakfast. Saturday after the game he let us know Dungey was laughing in the locker room. He's still got all his faculties, Cuse Nation!
So it sounds like now we can say for sure that Zack Mahoney will be the starter on Satur-
"Zack's the guy that will probably start the football game for us..."
God dammit.
...but all three of them have done a good job of working and competing. They're all ready to play. It'll just be one of those situations where we're saying, 'Who gives us the best opportunity to win right now?'"
That trio includes not only Austin Wilson but also AJ Long. The heir apparent to SU Football before Eric Dungey showed up, Long has been recovering from a broken hand and dealing with accuracy issues. However, it sounds like we'll see him sooner or later and at worst he might get some reps. Shafer told ESPN CNY that Long was "an option" Thursday afternoon.
It may not matter which guy is behind center on Saturday given how good LSU is and how banged up the Orange are. Still, what would it mean if SU could somehow pull it off?
"The obvious I would say is if you upset a team that is top 10 in the country with a bunch of young guys, a quarterback you didn't think was going to be playing much more than scout team, then that'd be one hell of a deal."
Indeed.
