Get To Know Your Orange Man - No. 16, QB Zack Mahoney

We don't have a Tackleberry on the roster yet but we do have a Mahoney.

Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

Name: Zack Mahoney

Position: Quarterback

Year: Sophomore

Height: 6-2

Weight: 201

Hometown: LaGrange, IL

High School: Lyons Township

2014 Stats: Zack threw for 1,943 yards and 18 touchdowns and ran for 212 yards while QBing for The College of DuPage (Illinois).

2015 Projections: Zack is fifth on the depth chart and, while this is no reflecting on him as a person or QB, something will probably have gone very wrong if he's seeing time on the field this season.

How'd He Get Here?: Mahoney actually did his own recruiting, sending a tape to Syracuse OC (then-QB coach) Tim Lester last year. Lester offered him a preferred walk-on spot and he accepted. This entire process went down in about a month's time. A late bloomer in football, Zack also had preferred walk-on offers from Indiana and Illinois but felt like Syracuse was the best fit for him.

What Did Recruiting Sites Say?: They didn't rate Mahoney at the time.

Money Quote: "I definitely feel like for this upcoming fall I can compete for backup position behind Terrel."

What Does the Coaching Staff Think?: Didn't see any quotes off-hand but clearly Tim Lester is a fan.

Interesting Nugget O'Interest: Fellow JUCO transfer Trey Dunkelberger became a quick friend during the "recruiting" process.
