The AJ Long situation is a bit of a curious one, if you ask me.
We've been told he's going to be redshirted this season, but, one can't help but wonder. Do Scott Shafer and Tim Lester have enough faith in the other backup quarterbacks to keep Long on the sidelines all season? If Terrel Hunt gets hurt again, are they willing to put their faith in Austin Wilson et al. and let Long twiddle his thumbs in street clothes?
I'm not convinced just yet.
For the meantime, at least, Long will only have one thumb to twiddle. The sophomore signal-caller is wearing a cast on his right hand (which is his throwing hand) after suffering a broken bone. Shafer told reporters at ACC Media Day about the injury but he also said that he expects Long to be ready for fall practice.
Long had inflammation of the shoulder last season after taking a series of bruising hits in relief of Hunt, who himself was injured for most of the year.
Long, who threw for 935 yards and four touchdowns (running for two more), is still listed third on the 2015 preseason depth chart behind Hunt and Wilson. Following him are freshmen Eric Dungey & Kenterius Womack as well as sophomore walk-on Zack Mahoney.
