As first reported by Scout, Syracuse Orange Class of 2016 QB recruit Rex Culpepper tore his ACL on Sunday during a football camp at USF. Syracuse.com got the confirmation from his dad later on.
The three-star quarterback committed verbally to the Orange in June and helped drive hype for a 2016 backfield that also included potential No. 44 RB Robert Washington. His commitment was also a big part of how SU got a commitment from 2016 DB Scoop Bradshaw, a high school teammate of Culpepper's.
Culpepper will undergo surgery on Tuesday and is still expected to enroll at Syracuse in January as well as compete during 2016 spring practice.
The bad news? Culpepper will miss out on that critical senior season in high school and will likely need to do some catching up if he wants to compete upon arrival.
The good(ish) news? The injury timing gives Culpepper plenty of time to recover. Besides, chances are he wasn't going to step in and be the starter right away anyway. No reason to rush this kind of injury. Shafer and Lester can ease him into the rotation and playbook. In a weird way that's not really fun to think about, it also probably scares away any last minute offers from other schools, though it sounds like Rex was pretty firm on SU regardless.
Here's to a successful surgery and speedy recovery for Rex.
