Name: Cole Murphy
Position: Kicker
Year: Sophomore
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 191
Hometown: Castaic, Calif.
High School: Valencia
2014 Stats: Murphy was one of 10 true freshman to see the field for the Orange in 2014, and he played in 12 games to boot. Oh, and he was a Lou Groza award semi-finalist. And went 13-of-16 on field goals, including two 50-yarders. All this while not even being on scholarship or looked at as the starting kicker going into the season.
2015 Projections: Even better than last year! He made the Groza Watch List for 2015 already, and is the surefire starter. He's also on scholarship for this fall, which is pretty cool.
How'd He Get Here?: Murphy said "no thanks" to Cal Poly SLO and Iowa, deciding to leave the sunshine of Southern California for the bitter cold of Syracuse.
What Did Recruiting Sites Say?: Nothing. That's silly. Did you guys watch Cole last year?
Money Quote: Sharing his path to Syracuse, with Syracuse.com:
"Even from right when I got the phone call from (Chris Gould), I was really excited. I instantly looked up Syracuse online. I looked up the maps and did everything I could just to find out what the school is about, where it is and just kind of familiarize myself with it."
And after those searches, you STILL came here? Nice job keeping those sunny pics at the top of the Google image results, gang!
Links Of Wonder: The Daily Orange's Matt Schneidman talks about an impending competition between Cole and incoming freshman kicker Sterling Hofrichter.

Tweets Of Wonder: Murphy's a Star Wars fan... or at least you can assume he is, based on this retweet.

What Does Shafer Think Of Him: Shafer, giving another example of how he's a really good guy (after Cole missed a late field goal vs. Clemson last year):
"Just how proud I am of him. I asked him if he ever had that many people yellin' and scream' and wavin' their arms when he was kicking a field goal, and he goes, 'No, but it doesn't matter.' And I said, 'Well you know what, I thought you did a hell of a job tonight. Just keep your chin up, come on back and make the next one.' Simple as that."
Interesting Nugget O'Interest: Cole went to Valenica High School. Valencia is referred to as "Awesometown." (cue up "The More You Know" graphic)
