Jim Boeheim has seen a few ADs come and go but he's seen a lot more football coaches come and go in his time with the Syracuse Orange. He's also been through his own share of ups, downs, wins, losses and many, many, many calls for his firing. Even now.
So when asked to comment on the idea that current SU football head coach Scott Shafer is on the hot seat, he wanted to put it in the kind of perspective that we've come to appreciate from James.
"Coach Shafer, I think, works as hard as anybody I've ever been around...Obviously, it takes some time. I think Coach (Dick) MacPherson was here four years and he had a losing record (18-25-1, before going 48-21-3 in his final six seasons). But everybody out here thinks they should win this year or we need a new football coach. And that's the most ridiculous way to think that I've ever heard in my life.
"And everyone standing right here thinks that. And that's ridiculous. I mean, you gotta give coaches a chance to get things going and to get the job done. And we all have to support those coaches. There's going to be ups and downs. You have to understand that.
"Mike Krzyzewski would have gotten fired after four years (62-57). He didn't have a good record (at Duke). You have to be patient. You have to wait. We have an athletic director, I think, who knows what he's doing and I think he'll make good decisions, based on everything I know."
If that bolded line sounds familiar, that's because Jim Boeheim has had a lot of life and he's heard a lot of ridiculous things in that life and he's uninterested in ranking many of those ridiculous things as anything less than "the most ridiculous," or "the dumbest" or "the most bullshit."
"For somebody to assert that Carmelo Anthony can’t play with somebody is the most ridiculous thing that I’ve ever heard. I’ve heard a few now, but of all the statements I’ve ever heard, that’s the most ridiculous."
"I've got to be honest with you, with all the things I've heard over the years, and you hear a lot of crazy things, this is the dumbest I've ever heard."
That’s the most bullshit thing I’ve seen in 30 years
"The strength of schedule is the biggest baloney I've ever heard in my life."
"That is the most fallacious statement I have ever heard from somebody, that she was pushed out. Ever. And I've heard a lot."
"That's the most bullshit thing I have ever heard when people say that."
"That's really the most idiotic suggestion of all time."
