Syracuse Football: Orange Were Last Ranked 214 AP Polls Ago

There you were, going about your day, when someone hit you (Sean) with a terrifying fact this morning:

Now, that ignores the appearance of several other ACC schools on this list of "longest drought since last AP poll appearance," including Wake Forest, Boston College, Pittsburgh and Virginia. But the fact of the matter is that Syracuse has not been ranked in 214 (!!!!!) straight AP polls, a longer wait than any other school in the conference (and second-longest of any power conference school, for that matter). Their last ranking? The final poll of the 2001 campaign, when the (then-) Orangemen finished a 10-3 season ranked 14th.

So what's happened in between then (which was 14 years ago) and now? Had you fallen asleep that day and not woken up until this very second, here's what you would have missed (not a full list, obviously):

• U.S.-led invasions of both Afghanistan and Iraq
• George W. Bush's re-election as President of the United States in 2004
• Barack Obama's election as President in 2008, and re-election in 2012
• iPhones one through six; plus Apple becoming the world's most valuable company
  
• Michael Jackson's death
• Steve Jobs's death
• The Dark Knight trilogy
• The Red Sox winning three World Series
• Lebron James's entire career
• TWO royal babies
• Boston College and USF sitting atop the college football polls at one point in 2007
• Kanye West's entire rap career
• On a now-related note: the ascent of the Kardashians in pop culture
• Every season of the Bachelor, Bachelorette, Bachelor Pad AND Bachelor in Paradise
• The Great Recession
• DOCTOR Gross's entire tenure
• Syracuse's departure from the Big East
• The birth and growth of both Facebook and Twitter (and social media, for that matter)
  
• The origin of this humble site's name, the founding of the site and hundreds of expletive-laced articles by yours truly after Sean made the fateful decision to let me write more
• THE SYRACUSE BASKETBALL TEAM WINNING THE GODDAMN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Again, SO MANY important things to name, but this calls attention to a sampling of the large number of things that someone would have missed between SU's last poll appearance and today. This is startling and saddening for us fans of Orange football. So hopefully you can take the above with a laugh.

In the meantime, I'll be crying in the corner, listening (appropriately) to Lifehouse's "Hanging by a Moment," the last song I can remember from when Orange football truly mattered on the national landscape...
