Last month, Syracuse offered 2016 4-star guard Alterique Gilbert. Today, Gilbert announced his top 5 schools, which included the Orange, according to Evan Daniels.
The five finalists are (in no specific order): Syracuse, Connecticut, Illinois, Texas and Louisville.
"I'm definitely going to visit Syracuse and Louisville," Gilbert told Scout.
Alterique grew up a Syracuse fan in Richmond (Va.), according to Daniels. "I've been a Syracuse fan since I was younger. I watched a lot of their players go through their program. I like their guard play. Recent guards like Jonny Flynn," he told Scout.
The 6-1 guard averaged 18.5 points per game as a junior for Miller Grove (Ga.). He added 6.2 assists, 5.3 steals and 4.7 rebounds, according to MaxPreps.
Syracuse currently has a verbal commitment from Matthew Moyer. With Moyer not going anywhere, the Orange have one remaining spot open for the 2016 class. 2016 5-star guard Tyus Battle plans to officially visit Syracuse later this month, which could put SU in a tough position.
Syracuse could possibly regain a scholarship, which depends on the effectiveness of the appeal. It's something that the staff shouldn't rely on, but remains a possibility.
The Orange are allowed 10 scholarship players for the next four seasons, and currently have nine projected (including Moyer) for the 2016-17 season.
