Syracuse Men's Soccer: Orange Sign Das Boot

Syracuse Soccer signs Hendrick Hilpert, a 19 year old goalkeeper from the German 4th Division. He will immediately add to the competition at goalkeeper.

When Alex Bono left last year and Matt Stith graduated, there was only Pat Castle sitting on the sideline for the Syracuse Orange when it came to options in net. Now, with the incoming class, we're back up to three viable keepers. Coach McIntyre has added Hendrick Hilpert, a German keeper to the fold to compliment the returning Castle and freshman Austin Aviza. He's also officially first in line to challenge the Football kickers for the right to the "Das Boot" nickname.

Hilpert was a U17 player for TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga and most recently a U19 for Eintracht Braunschweig as well as Braunshweig's professional reserve team. He's had experience with the German national teams at U-16 and U-17 caliber. Overall he should be a solid addition to the squad and I wouldn't be surprised to see him starting from day one.

Coach McIntyre sung his praises with the following:

"Hendrik is an experienced goalkeeper who has played at a very high level for several years, He is an athletic, modern keeper who commands his area very well. With Hendrik, Austin and Patrick (Castle) we are very excited about the quality and depth we have at the position."

It should be an interesting start to camp, looking at a few of these position battles. Adding a Top 10 class to campus will lead to some definite turnover and possibly some new faces into familiar positions. I'll be putting together a series as we move into the summer showcasing where some of these new pieces fit in with the returners.
