This past weekend, three female Syracuse University students did something that no one has ever done before. They competed at the United States Intercollegiate Boxing Association National Championship in in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Ediva Zanker, Ioana Turcan and Samantha Usman repped the Syracuse Orange as well as the Syracuse University Boxing Club. Usman, along with male boxers Tom Smith and Tony Chao, qualified for the finals as well. Smith was the lone national title winner for the school while Usman took home 2nd place in the women’s flyweight division. .

Regardless of how far any of them got, it was a fantastic way to put Syracuse on the map on both sides. And as for the women, they hope to be trendsetters:

"I want to prove that I and the other women on the team can do anything you set your heart and mind to," [Zanker] said. "I hope that other women on our team step forward and set an example for the other girls to what they can do, too."

..."I thought we represented (Syracuse) really well," he said Tony Chao, the captain of the Syracuse Boxing club. "We really put our school on the map as far as college boxing goes."

Said Chao: "I don't think anyone will forget about Syracuse."
