Given how good the conference is, you could argue winning the ACC Championship is in field hockey is a lofty title in and of itself. The No. 1 Syracuse Orange moved one step closer to that next goal with a 3-2 overtime victory over the Virginia Cavaliers on Friday.
In what was essentially a home game for the fifth-seed Cavs, the Orange were able to get off to an early 1-0 lead thanks to always-reliable Alma Fenne. They took that lead into the half and then extended it to 2-0 thanks to an Emma Russell score. However, Virginia fought back and netted two goals in the final 26 minutes of the game. Credit goalie Jess Jecko for a great kick save towards the end of regulation to help send things into overtime. Six minutes in, Russell took a pass from Lies Lagerweij and buried the game-winner.
SU dominated on shots as usual (21-4) but Virginia goalie Rebecca Holden kept them in it with eight saves. The Orange are now 17-0 overall on the year.
SU now awaits the winner of No. 3 North Carolina and No. 11 Boston College on Sunday at 1 p.m. If the Eagles win, the game would not only be for the ACC Title but also big time #OrangeEagle points.
Update: It'll be North Carolina...
