During halftime of the game between the Syracuse Orange and Boston College Eagles, Scott Shafer spoke with a sideline reporter with an energy and demeanor that felt, well, very human. I don't know if that's exactly the right way to explain it but compared to his often-guarded, #hardnosed way of dealing with such events, it felt a bit like a peek behind the curtain to see the man behind the coach.
Sadly, it of course also comes after Shafer has been fired as head coach of the Orange. SU went on to win the game, 20-17, and Shafer took to the podium one last time afterward to speak with the media. That humanity continued to shine through and Coach Shafe left with his head held high and kind words for the community he's been a part of for seven years.
"God bless this community...and Go Orange."
And then he was gone.
