The Syracuse Orange field hockey team have made it a habit of going to the Final Four in recent years. They've been to four of them since 2008 and three in the last four years. What they have yet to do is win a National Championship.
The No. 2 Orange will look to remedy that when they take on the No. 1 North Carolina Tar Heels in the title game on Sunday. The game is set for 1:00 p.m. in Ann Arbor, MI. You can watch a live stream of the game on NCAA.com.
SU finished the regular season undefeated for the first time in school history, earning a No. 1 ranking for much of the latter half. Their only loss came in the ACC Championship to, you guessed it, UNC. After earning a top seed in the NCAA Tournament, SU cruised to victories over UMass and Princeton to return to the Final Four. Friday, they handed defending champ UConn their first loss of the year in overtime and now get the rubber match against the Heels. SU won the regular-season match-up 4-2.
If you're just getting on the bandwagon, there's a few names you need to know. Senior Alma Fenne is the one-year wonder for the Orange, leading the team in goals (18) and overall points (45). Her road to Syracuse is a long and windy one. Freshman Roos Weers is up next with 14 goals and 37 overall points along with senior Emma Russell (14 goals). Goalie Jess Jecko has been a force in the net all year long as well. Russell, Jecko and Alyssa Manley have been a part of three Final Four squads now.
ultimately, however, they want to bring home SU's first Field Hockey National Title. Let's see if they can do it.
