Friday's Northeast Regional meet went as planned for the Syracuse Orange cross-country squads. The men won their 3rd straight team title and will make their 7th consecutive appearance at the NCAA meet. Syracuse coasted to a winning score of 29 points behind the efforts of "The Treacherous Three" of Justyn Knight, Colin Bennie and Martin Hehir who finished 1-2-3. Joel Hubbard and Dan Lennon were 11th and 12th and the Orange showed off their depth with Philo Germano and Shawn Wilson placing 15th and 19th. Only 37 seconds separated the top 7 runners as Syracuse dominated the regional again.
Justyn Knight spoke with Letsrun.com after the race and talked about the team's goal to earn a podium finish (Top 4 teams) this year.
The Orange women finished 2nd behind Providence to clinch their 7th NCAA appearance in the last 8 years. As usual, Margo Malone led the way in 8th place, but unlike previous races this season, the other Syracuse runners were able to stay closer to her. Shaylyn Tuite (12th), Sydney Leiher (15th), and Cassia Hameline (20th) earned All-Regional honors and Rebecca Skodis rounded out the scoring in 37th place.
Syracuse Head Coach Chris Fox was pleased with the performance of both teams and is looking for the Orange to return from Louisville with some hardware.
We'll preview the NCAA meet next week. Congratulations to the Orange!
