The Syracuse Orange women's ice hockey team completed their six-game road trip with a 5-1 loss against No. 4 Clarkson at Cheel Arena. This is the second and final time these two teams have met this season. Clarkson (11-1-2) won the last matchup in Syracuse as well, 3-1. The Orange (5-6-1) is now 0-3 versus ranked opponents this season.
The Golden Knights lit up the scoreboard early. Nearly three minutes into the game, Genevieve Bannon rebounded a shot off of the pipe and put it into a wide open net. Then with under two minutes to play in the first, Clarkson struck again on a powerplay. Renata Fast, a member of Team Canada's U22 development team, made a nice pass across ice to teammate Shannon MacAulay in front of the cage who buried a one timer stick-side high past SU goalie Jenn Gilligan. Clarkson went into first intermission with a 2-0 lead.
Gilligan had 29 saves on the night while allowing five goals.
In the middle of the second period, the Golden Knights tacked on two more quick goals to make it 4-0. Then in the final frame, Erin Ambrose put Clarkson up 5-0.
Syracuse's offense struggled, especially on the powerplay. They were 1-7 on the night. The inability for the Orange to capitalize on man-up opportunities has been a theme all season. Overall, SU is 7-49 (.143) on powerplays.
The lone goal came with 31 seconds left to play when Megan Quinn put a wristshot through the five-hole of Clarkson goalie Shea Tiley.
The Orange return home for the first time in almost a month. They face Cornell at the War Memorial Arena this Saturday at 3pm. Live video of the game and live statistics can be accessed via Cuse.com
