Syracuse Men's Soccer Upsets No. 2 Clemson, Moves On To ACC Championship

The Orange upset the defending ACC champs and move on to play for the ACC Title for the first time.

Well, you can't say that the Syracuse Orange didn't beat the Clemson Tigers this week.

The No. 13 Syracuse men's soccer squad is off to it's first-ever ACC Championship game after upsetting the defending conference champ Clemson 2-0 in the semifinals on Wednesday.

Junior Ben Polk was the hero on the day scoring both goals. His first one came in the 21st minute when he took the ball with his back to the goal just outside the box. He settled, turned and shot a rocket into the back of the net and the Orange took a 1-0 lead into the half.

In the 58th minute, Chris Nanco's shot was stopped by the Clemson goalkeeper but the ball bounced towards Noah Rhynhart, who played it over to Polk who in turn found the back of the net once more. It was Polk's team-leading ninth goal of the season and the capper on Wednesday's victory.

The Orange had to play stout defense from there on out as Clemson upped it's attack but despite two corner kicks the Tigers were unable to get any second-half shots on goal.

The Orange now head to South Bend where they'll take on the No. 9 Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Sunday for the ACC Title. The winner also earns an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. Opening kick is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. EST.
