In 2008, the Syracuse Orange field hockey team started the season 14-0. The 2015 version is closing in on that high-mark.
The No. 1 Orange ventured to Kentucky on Friday to take on the No. 11 Louisville Cardinals. What they got was a hard-fought battle. Alma Fenne continued her hot streak by putting SU on the board just five minutes in to the contest, a 1-0 lead that the Orange would take into the half. Elisa Garcia eventually knotted the game up for the Cards with a penalty corner in the 57th minute. Things stayed that way until the 64th minute when Roos Weers took advantage of a penalty stroke and put SU ahead 2-1, a score they would maintain until the final bell sounded.
It was a game full of cautions and penalties so perhaps it was fitting that a penalty was what helped determine the outcome. The Orange also have to thank goalie Jess Jecko, who made four big saves on the night. The Orange outshot the Cards 9-7 overall.
You can watch a replay of the entire match on WatchESPN.
The 12-0 start ties the 2012 squad for the 2nd-best start in program history. The only better start came in 2008 when the Orange started 14-0 en route to a Final Four appearance.
The Orange remain on the road and travel to play the Indiana Hoosiers (6-6) on Sunday at noon. It's the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Both live video and live stats can be accessed via Cuse.com.
