In the Police Academy movies, Carey Mahoney rises from lowly cadet all the way up to Sergeant before floating away in an air balloon in the fourth film, never to be seen again. It's an ascension no one could have predicted or saw coming, certainly not Captain Harris. So it would be wise to keep an eye on quarterback Zack Mahoney, who has joined the Syracuse Orange football team as a preferred walk-on. You never know what wacky hijinks he might get himself into.
Mahoney, originally from Lyons Township (La Grange, Ill.) High School, contacted Lester — another Chicago-area native — at the recommendation of DuPage head coach Matt Foster. Lester watched Mahoney's highlights, liked what he saw and quickly offered up a preferred walk-on position, Mahoney said.
"This all happened truly a month ago, everything started within three weeks and I was enrolled and in school," Mahoney said. "There's a new offense that (Lester) felt I could fit right into and compete right away."
Mahoney threw for 1,943 yards, 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions for the College of DuPage Chaparrals last season. He comes to Syracuse with three years eligibility and he's officially fourth on the depth chart headed into the 2015 season behind Terrel Hunt, AJ Long and Austin Wilson. It remains to be seen if he'll be joined by any other QB transfers as well.
Now just get me a linebacker named Tackleberry and we're all set.
