Some good news for the Syracuse Orange athletics family on Saturday as the men's soccer team upset one of the nation's top programs, the No. 2 Virginia Cavaliers.
Senior defender and co-captain Skylar Thomas scored the only goal of the match in the 31st minute. The 6-foot-3 Thomas soared into the box during a Julian Buescher corner kick, finishing the service into the back of the net with a header.
Already in the midst of one of their best season starts at 8-1, the Orange now have their first win over a top-five opponent since 2000's win over No. 1 UConn.
Alex Bono notched four saves and his eighth shutout of the season. SU has only given up one goal all year long and is among the best in the nation in save percentage and shutout percentage.
Up next for the Orange, after they get a brand new shiny ranking, will be a September 30 match against Colgate at SU Soccer Stadium. The game will be televised on TWCS and ESPN3 if you want to hop on the bandwagon. Good time for it.
