The Syracuse Orange football team has a big opponent this weekend but the men's soccer team is going up against one even bigger. The No. 18 Orange ( 7-1-0) put their hot start to the test when they host the No. 2 Virginia Cavaliers (4-2-1) on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium.
Admission is free, so, you know, be there.
The good news/bad news is that Virginia lost on Thursday in a non-conference shocker, dropping a 2-1 contest to Davidson. That could mean the Hoos are vulnerable or it could mean they're gonna be super pissed off and intent on maintaining a high ranking. The Cavaliers won the first meeting between the two schools last season, 2-0.
Virginia made it to the Final Four last season and have six national titles to their credit. They're doing very well. This year they're a second-half team, scoring six of their seven goals in the 2nd half or overtime. Sam Hayward leads the team with two goals.
The good news for Syracuse? They're currently tied with Michigan State and George Mason for the national lead in fewest goals allowed this season (1) and owns the nation’s top goals-against average at 0.13. In addition, Syracuse’s .968 save percentage and .880 shutout percentage are tops in the country. Defense. Defense. Defense. On the other side of the pitch, Emil Ekblom is your Real Orange Hero as he leads the squad with five goals and eleven total points.
At 7-1-0, the 2014 season so far is the best eight-game start for the Orange since 1984. Let's see if they can take it to the next level on Saturday...
